Prince Institute was founded in 1976 by Sara Prince, a teacher and former machine shorthand court reporter for the United States Air Force. In its second year of operation, Mrs. Prince was joined by her husband, Charles, whose background in business administration and education added significant strength to the institute. The school was approved by the Veterans Administration for veteran training in January 1979. In December of 1982, the National Court Reporters Association awarded the school its Certificate of Approval. In December of 1984, Prince Institute was awarded accreditation by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. In 1995, approval was granted to Prince Institute by the appropriate approval agencies to award an associate degree to students graduating from the Court Reporting program.
In January 2000, Sara Prince retired after 23 years as president and Patricia Hill, a long-time instructor at Prince Institute, became the new president and owner of the school. In April 2003, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools recognized Prince Institute as an honor roll institution. In August 2003, approval was granted to offer an associate degree program in Realtime Reporting with a concentration in Judicial Reporting. In April 2004, approval was granted to offer a certificate program in Scoping/Proofreading. Also in April 2004, Prince Institute was granted approval to offer certain courses through distance education.
Prince Institute is moving forward with an exciting vision of the future, still determined to implement a Captioning/CART program - despite a lack of government funding - and to put all programs on line. We are enrolling one of the largest classes in recent history for the fall quarter start in October. Prince Institute students are writing realtime from day one in theory and are encouraged to make the fullest possible use of CAT technology while in training. Our graduates are still strongly sought after by local and regional firms. The long-term dedicated faculty, most of whom maintain CRI status, continue to provide enviable stability and continuity to the institution as it enters its 30th year of training reporters and ancillary workers. We remain dedicated to our mission: "to offer the best educational and training program possible … to enable graduates to take to the marketplace the highest possible level of job knowledge and skills."
